FAQs: Faculty and Staff

What is being done to mitigate construction-related traffic and parking issues this fall — particularly once students return?

The recent increase in construction activity, coupled with the closure of multiple parking lots, will impact faculty and staff parking this fall. Due to limited parking resources, the College is taking steps to limit the impact of the loss of parking for employees. The College is no longer issuing core campus parking passes to contractors working on large capital projects. Contractors have started parking in a satellite parking lot at the south end of Hanover adjacent to Route 120 and taking a shuttle to campus. This change should free up parking availability for staff and faculty and reduce road congestion in and around campus.

Is there any parking or travel guidance for faculty and staff on student move-in days?

Of the three move-in days this fall, only one —Wednesday, September 4—takes place on a weekday. Move-in is expected to run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and we recommend staff and faculty arrive and depart campus around that window. In addition, to the extent possible, faculty and staff should check with their managers to see if it's feasible to work remotely that day.

Here are some additional resources to help you get where you need to be:

Are there any projects slated to wrap up soon so roads and walkways can be reopened?

The construction you see around campus represents exciting investments in Dartmouth's future. As many of these projects are complex and take place in phases, realistically we can expect to have construction taking place on campus for the foreseeable future. We are committed to communicating with faculty and staff about construction updates that impact you directly, such as parking changes, road closures, and changes to pedestrian walkways.

The Town of Hanover has closed College Street this summer between Wheelock and Wentworth Streets. We fully anticipate that work to be completed and College Street to be re-opened in advance of the coming fall term.

What is the long-term plan to provide more parking options for faculty and staff?

The change that took place in August requiring contractors working on capital projects to use a satellite parking lot will free up parking lot availability and help mitigate road congestion in and around campus. Beyond that, we will continue to look for opportunities to make best use of our available parking areas. In addition, we encourage Dartmouth faculty and staff to look for opportunities to carpool with colleagues, rideshare with roommates or partners, bike to work, or take public bus transportation. Working one or more days remotely, with manager approval, is another way for faculty and staff to help address parking challenges.
