Summary of Policy

This policy is designed to promote the safety of both pedestrians and to affirm Dartmouth's commitment to comply with Hanover and New Hampshire bicycle safety regulations.

Reason for Policy

To promote the safety of both pedestrians and cyclists and support the safe use of bicycles on campus.

To affirm Dartmouth's commitment to comply with town of Hanover and New Hampshire state bicycle safety regulations.

Policy Statement

The following state laws and town ordinances are in effect as College policy. Their source is referenced in parentheses.

Other safety rules of the road:

  • Obey all traffic signs, signals, and lane markings
  • Yield to pedestrians
  • Go with the traffic flow
  • Wear a bike helmet
  • Wear reflective gear
  • Use a light when cycling near or after dark
  • Be predictable
  • Stay alert at all times
  • Look before turning
  • Watch for parked cars that may start to move forward or back up, or for occupants who open their doors

Exclusions & Exceptions

This policy applies to all faculty, staff and students who own or operate bicycles on campus.

Ramifications

Subject to discipline and may be required to pay for any damage.
