About the Project

Construction work is underway on and around Thayer Drive to install new hot and chilled water piping to service area residence halls. A pedestrian pathway is being installed to allow access to buildings in the area during the construction period.

Project Goals

  • To bring hot and chilled water piping from an existing source in MacLean Engineering Sciences Center down Thayer Drive to service area residence halls.
  • To continue Dartmouth's commitment to improving energy efficiency by transitioning from steam to hot-water heating.
  • To design and conduct this work in such a way that minimizes the traffic and pedestrian impact as much as possible.

Project Timing

The project kicked off in fall of 2025 and is expected to end in spring 2026.

  • Phase 1: Construction mobilization and enabling work that includes installation of concrete barriers, fencing, and barricades, as well as excavation work to create a temporary pedestrian walkway around the construction area.
  • Phase 2: Site preparation and excavation work, as well as installation of mainline and electrical systems. During this time, there will be a one- to two-week period where a single traffic lane will be available along Thayer Drive during the day. Flaggers will be on-site at all times for traffic control.
  • Phase 3: Next phase of mainline, manhole, electrical installation. Restoration of sidewalk/roadway/curb, landscaping, and Thayer concrete/patio area.
