A generous gift by the Stephen Lewinstein family, Classes of 1963 and 1998, has enabled the Dartmouth athletics department to purchase a state-of-the-art, high-definition video scoreboard for Memorial Field. With a 16-foot-high by 23-foot-wide LED video display, the scoreboard will provide Big Green football fans with instant replays, game statistics, vivid graphics, colorful animations, and sponsor recognition.

“We are extremely grateful to Steve Lewinstein and his family for providing this terrific enhancement to Memorial Field,” says Athletic Director Harry Sheehy. “The video screen will definitely add another level of excitement to our home football games, and I’m sure our fans will especially enjoy seeing replays of key action right after it happens.”
Stephen Lewinstein, part owner of the Boston Celtics and the Italian soccer team AS Roma, said the gift was a logical extension of his family’s love for athletics and Dartmouth. “I’m thrilled that the project is coming to reality,” he says. “I still come to Hanover to watch as many football games as I can. I’m pleased that our family could contribute to Dartmouth in this way, and think it will be a real asset to the football program and the school.”
The new Daktronics scoreboard will be located at the south end of the stadium to avoid direct sunlight and maximize image clarity. Daktronics is recognized as the world’s leading provider of full-color LED video displays.
It is expected to be ready for Dartmouth’s Homecoming football game against Yale on October 12 and possibly for the home opener, a night game against Holy Cross on September 28. The current scoreboard was donated 17 years ago by the Class of 1966, whose generosity will be recognized with a plaque at Memorial Field.
The new scoreboard installation is the most recent update to Memorial Field, which in 2011 was fitted with lights for night football games. Originally built in 1893, the stadium underwent significant renovations in 2006, including the east stands, a FieldTurf playing surface, Floren Varsity House, and a new outdoor track. Memorial Field can now accommodate 13,000 spectators for athletic events.
