West End Parking Garage

Update for the two weeks beginning April 15 and 22, 2019

Excavation and Construction of Garage

Excavation and construction of a 340-car garage and loading dock for the west end began January, 2019. The three-story garage is located below the planned new building to be shared by Thayer School of Engineering, the Department of Computer Science, and the Magnuson Center for Entrepreneurship. The Dartmouth Electron Microscope Facility will also be housed in the building, which will be constructed on the former Cummings lot land.

The garage is expected to be complete in the fall of 2021. Additional parking in the west end is available in Channing Cox, Ledyard lot, and Lewiston lot with a free shuttle that runs on 15-minute intervals between 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., Monday - Friday between Ledyard, Lewiston and Tuck Circle.

What's Happening

  • Work is underway to extend the new Access Road from Thayer Drive to the Channing Cox parking lot. The perimeter fence is being extended and necessary trees south of the residence halls have been removed.
  • The pedestrian path/stairs will be relocated.
  • Installation of sheet piling is almost complete; this work has caused significant vibrations and noise.
  • The team is installing helical anchors (big screws) that will hold back the metal sheet pilings after excavation.
  • Exporting of onsite soils continues, with trucks travelling as expected to I-91.
  • See what's happening at the site by viewing the time lapse camera that takes photos every 10 minutes.

What to expect

  • Noise and vibrations results from the intallation of metal sheeting panels. This work will take place early Feb. through early April.
  • Perimeter fencing will be in place, and signage will direct vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists around the construction area.
  • Access to Thayer Drive is limited to construction vehicles only.
  • Employees, students and visitors to Thayer and Tuck should enter the west end campus from Tuck Mall. From the west, Tuck Mall can be accessed via the newly reopened Old Tuck Drive from West Wheelock St.
  • Pedestrian access to the west end from Thayer Drive will be in place throughout the project.
  • Regular work hours will be Monday – Friday, from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Construction vehicles will travel to and from the site on Thayer Drive to West Wheelock Street, over the Ledyard bridge to Interstate 91.
