Thornton Hall Capital Renewal

About the Project

Thornton Hall, originally built in 1829 as a dormitory and currently home to the Religion and Philosophy departments, is scheduled for major infrastructure upgrades from December 2020 through August 2021.

Thornton Hall will be closed during the renovation with faculty and staff temporarily relocated to other buildings. Infrastructure updates will be similar to those recently completed in Reed Hall and include the following.

  • Improve mechanical systems including converting the heating system from steam to hot water, and adding both air conditioning and mechanical ventilation.
  • Install full sprinkler coverage
  • Address accessibility with an interior elevator and accessible restrooms
  • Convert classroom 105 to a flat-floor classroom with flexible furniture systems
  • Refurbish the existing window systems
  • Improve lighting and upgrade electrical infrastructure
  • Refresh flooring and other interior finishes in commons areas, classrooms, and faculty offices.
  • The roof was replaced during the summer of 2020.

Thornton Hall is second in the row of white buildings from East Wheelock, between Reed Hall and Dartmouth Hall.
